Most people in their high school or academic years, have at some point in time, pulled an all night study session to
cram for a really important test. This is not a recommended thing to do to our bodies and our brains. Not sleeping, we are depriving our bodies of the refreshment of shutting down and recharging all our systems for a new day.
If you find this is something you must do, the following tips might prove helpful:
1. Take breaks hourly to refresh your thought processes. Moving away from the books, do some exercises in your room, take a short walk outside, or do some body stretches.
2. For the healthy picture, drink water. This will leave your stomach feeling full and revamp your body and mind as well.
3. Stock up on caffeine in the form of tea, colas, or coffee. Since your body absorbs caffeine fast, sip as you study. The caffeine will hinder the message to your brain that you are sleepy; giving you more study time.
4. Find a study partner. Not only will this help you stay awake and alert, you can also task each other with
questions on the subject you are studying. The main idea of studying in pairs is you can keep each other awake.
5. Background music might be an option. However, if you are studying alone, it could lull you to sleep. If you
choose loud music, it could be too distracting to absorb what you are studying. Weigh this option carefully.
6. Lastly, if you are fortunate and have a study partner, try taking a power nap. You could also ask someone nearby to wake you in 30 minutes. It’s amazing how the body can replenish when given just 30 minutes crash time.
